Meet the Faculty

Larry G. Hornsby, BSN, CRNA, FAANA, is a nationally renowned expert in the business of anesthesia and a highly sought-after resource in the field. With a career deeply rooted in anesthesia management and professional advocacy, Larry has owned and managed numerous health-related companies, including an anesthesia billing company, an anesthesia management and consulting service, multiple anesthesia service companies, an anesthesia staffing company, and an anesthesia continuing education seminar company.

Larry has made significant contributions to the profession, serving in nearly every elected position within the Alabama Association of Nurse Anesthetists (ALANA) and the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA). He served as AANA President from 2000-2001 and is particularly well-known for his key role in negotiating the nationwide supervision opt-out ruling with the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. Prior to his presidency, he served on the AANA Board of Directors for four years, holding the offices of Region 7 Director, Vice President, and President-Elect. He also chaired several key committees, including the AANA Commission on Anesthesia Economics and Reimbursement and the AANA CRNA Political Action Committee, bringing in record-breaking contributions.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions, Larry received the AANA’s highest honor, the Agatha Hodgins Award for Outstanding Accomplishment, in 2013. His alma mater, the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing, named him Distinguished Alumni of the Year in 2016. He was inducted as an inaugural Fellow of the AANA in 2021.

Currently, Larry serves as the Program Director of the Hornsby Business Institute at Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia, where he focuses on educating CRNAs on the business aspects of anesthesia.

Christopher P. Hulin, DNP, MBA, CRNA, is the President of the Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia (MTSA) where he serves as a part-time faculty member. Dr. Hulin has been a board-certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) for 10 years and began his career in home health administration after graduating with his MSN in Nursing Administration from Vanderbilt University.

Dr. Hulin then joined Kettering Medical Center (KMC) to serve as the Home Health Program Manager before being promoted to the Director of the Division. From KMC, Dr. Hulin went to Adventist Health System—Ormand Beach Division to assist with the recent hospital merger and served as Vice President of Operations for multiple campuses.

After eight years of healthcare administration, Dr. Hulin decided he needed to be more directly involved in patient care. He became a beside nurse in the ICU at Skyline Medical Center and studied to become a CRNA at MTSA. He then joined the anesthesia team at Crockett Hospital in Lawrenceburg, TN where he saw the great need for quality healthcare in this rural and underserved community.

His passion for patients and desire to impact real change in health equity led Dr. Hulin back to MTSA where he became the Assistant Dean, Program Administrator/Dean, and currently, President. Still a practicing CRNA, Dr. Hulin teaches doctoral level courses in Healthcare Policy, Economics & Legal Issues, Organizational Leadership in Healthcare, and a master level course in Professional Aspects.

In addition to his professional duties, a life of service is critically important to Dr. Hulin and his family. They engage in several service projects throughout the year to serve they local community and Dr. Hulin continues international mission work. Dr. Hulin and his wife are proud of their three children, one of whom recently completed his training to become a 68W (combat medic) in the U.S. Army and is now stationed in Alaska.

Juan Quintana, DNP, MHS, CRNA has been practicing anesthesia for many years and is a recognized leader in education and the evaluation of cost-effectiveness and efficiency in anesthesia practice. He earned his Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from Texas Christian University (TCU) in 2009, a Master’s degree in Health Science from Texas Wesleyan University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Science from Texas Woman’s University (TWU). Fluent in both English and Spanish, Juan has demonstrated a deep commitment to global health, participating in over 20 medical mission trips with Healing the Children, providing care to children born with cleft lip and palate deformities across South America.

In 2010, Juan became the first CRNA to serve on the Medicare Evidence Development and Coverage Advisory Council (MEDCAC). He has also served on the CMS – Acumen Technical Expert Panel Medicare, co-chaired the Musculoskeletal Non-spine sub-committee, and participated in the CMS – Yale New Haven Health Services Corporation CORE Technical Expert panel. His leadership roles include serving as President of the Texas ANA and as President of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) in 2016.

Currently, he is the COO of Standard Anesthesia Associates, providing essential services to several facilities in Texas. He is also a co-owner of ABC Consultants LLC, an anesthesia billing company, and International Anesthesia Seminars, which educates nurse anesthesia students on the business aspects of anesthesia.

Mike MacKinnon, DNP, FNP-C, CRNA, earned his Master of Science in Nursing degree from Thomas Jefferson University in 2009, completed his Family Nurse Practitioner certification at UMASS Boston in 2015, and obtained a Doctor of Nurse Practice degree from the University of Alabama in 2018.

Professionally, Mike has served on the Board of Directors for the Arizona Association of Nurse Anesthesiology, including two terms as President. He has also contributed to multiple AANA committees, including the Current AA Strategic Advisory Panel, AANA PAC, and as the past Nominating Committee Chair. He is actively involved with CMS committees and currently serves as the Region 5 Director on the AANA Board of Directors. In recognition of his contributions, he was inducted as a Fellow of the AANA in 2021.

Mike has a special interest in ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia, independent practice, and addressing Anesthesiologist Assistant encroachment. Since graduation, he has worked in independent CRNA practice and is currently a managing partner in a CRNA-only group of 17 CRNAs in rural Arizona. Additionally, he serves as the Assistant Program Director for the National University Nurse Anesthesiology program in Fresno, California.

Tracy Young, MSNA, MBA, CRNA, graduated with his Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia (MSNA) from Texas Wesleyan University in 2001 and began his career as an independent CRNA in Louisiana. In 2008, Tracy earned his MBA with a focus on Healthcare from The George Washington University. He is the Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Essential Anesthesia Management, which operates in over 130 facilities across five states with a team of more than 1,400 anesthesia providers.

Tracy is the incoming Vice President of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) and has previously served as the AANA Region 7 Director. His extensive involvement with the AANA includes chairing the Nominating Committee, serving on the Finance Committee, Executive Evaluation Committee, and Technical Reimbursement Panel, as well as chairing the Governance Committee and the AANA Innovation Panel.

In addition to his national leadership roles, Tracy has been actively involved in state leadership for the Louisiana Association of Nurse Anesthesiology. He has served as the State Reimbursement Specialist, Government Relations Committee (GRC) Chair, Vice President, and completed two terms as State President.

Rosann Spiegel, JD, DNAP, CRNA, APRN, is an acclaimed professional with dual expertise in nurse anesthesia and law, making significant contributions to both fields. She earned her Diploma in Nurse Anesthesia from the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital School of Nurse Anesthesia at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and a Juris Doctor degree from Florida International University. She furthered her education by obtaining a Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP) degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Her legal career includes serving as an Assistant Public Defender for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida and working in private practice, primarily representing claimants in disability insurance disputes in state and federal courts. Dr. Spiegel joined Barry University’s faculty in 2011 as an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Assistant Program Director of Didactic Education for the Anesthesiology Program. She also teaches as an adjunct assistant professor for the School of Podiatric Medicine at Barry and engages in clinical practice at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine. In 2022, she retired as Assistant Professor and Program Director of the Florida Gulf Coast University Nurse Anesthesiology Program in Fort Myers, Florida. She continues to practice clinically at an outpatient surgery center in Lecanto, Florida.

Dr. Spiegel has been actively involved in the Florida Association of Nurse Anesthetists (FANA) and was recently installed as Vice President. She serves on the FANA Government Relations Committee and is the FANA representative for the Leadership Action Team of the Florida Action Coalition. Her contributions to the field also include developing a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) curriculum for entry into nurse anesthesia practice, which serves as the foundation for the new DNP in Anesthesiology curriculum at Barry University.

Dr. Spiegel is a respected speaker on legal, ethical, and clinical topics and has presented at various local, state, and national professional meetings.

Gavin Baker, MSN, CRNA, graduated from LSUHSC with a BSN in 2006 and earned his MSN in Nurse Anesthesia in 2011. He has extensive experience as a CRNA in various settings, including large teaching institutions, level 1 trauma centers, ambulatory surgery centers, and community hospitals.

He has also independently practiced in gastroenterology and pain procedures. Gavin co-founded Louisiana Anesthesia Solutions to address local anesthesia provider shortages and successfully expanded the business nationally by forming KREWE Anesthesia.

Chase Chiasson, MSN, CRNA, began his entrepreneurial journey at 19 and graduated from Nicholls State University with a BSN in 2008. He gained valuable ICU experience before earning a Master’s in Nurse Anesthesia from LSUHSC in 2015.

Chase has worked in numerous New Orleans hospitals as an anesthesia provider. His collaboration with Gavin Baker led to the establishment of KREWE Anesthesia, which addresses critical staffing needs in anesthesia.
