About the Presenters: Rigo and Claudia Garcia
Rigo has been a registered nurse since 1996 and has been a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist since 2004. Following a traumatic sports injury requiring surgery, rest, and rehabilitation in 2010, Rigo became dependent on the medication that was legally prescribed to him by his surgeon, also a friend. After losing nearly everything dear to him, assistance came in the form of an intervention, intensive treatment, and accountability.
Claudia has been a registered nurse since 2003. Soon after, she was promoted to the charge nurse and supervisor of the surgical department. Incidentally, it was the same surgical department Rigo worked at while struggling with substances. Faced with the difficult decision on how to best intervene, drastic measures would need to be taken to consider her role as a patient advocate, department supervisor, co-worker, and the partner of an impaired health care professional.
