Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists are a relatively new class of medications used to manage Type 2 diabetes and obesity. GLP-1 is a hormone made in the small intestine, which releases insulin from your pancreas and blocks the secretion of glucagon. In addition, these drugs slow digestion, which delays gastric emptying. Contrary to conventional fasting guidelines, patients on GLP-1 agonists pose unique challenges due to their altered gastric physiology, increasing their risk of aspiration-related complications. Point-of-care ultrasound is an established technology that provides objective data regarding the qualitative and quantitative contents in the stomach. This webinar will be a live interactive event, demonstrating the proper techniques for performing a gastric ultrasound examination followed by an interactive Q&A session.
