Nurse Anesthesia Educator Webinar: Academic Incivility

The faculty discussion on Incivility in Education will be structured to address this critical issue comprehensively. The session will begin with a presentation, followed by a panel discussion exploring the topic from multiple perspectives followed by an open discussion to conclude the event, allowing participants to share insights and engage in dialogue. The objectives of the session are to analyze the factors contributing to incivility in educational settings, examine its impact on faculty performance and well-being, and evaluate the influence of institutional culture and policies in mitigating these challenges. Participants will also propose evidence-based strategies for managing incivility professionally and fostering a culture of respect and professionalism across all levels of education. This event aims to facilitate an open exchange of experiences and best practices, promoting a supportive academic community.

Panelists:

Hallie Evans, DNP, CRNA, APRN, CNE
Hallie Evans is the Program Director for the Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Completion Program and Nurse Anesthesia Educator Program at Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia. Her expertise includes a wide range of topics including Evidence-Based Practice, Artificial Intelligence for Classroom Engagement, Faculty Strategies to Incorporate AI, Health and Wellness, Grant Writing and Educating future Nurse Anesthesia Educators in the clinical, didactic and simulation settings, as well as curriculum planning and mapping. She serves as a professor for both the Doctorate Completion Program and Nurse Educator Track. She displays her commitment to the next generation of CRNAs through innovative teaching methods and rigorous curriculum development.

Dr. Evans began her career in education as a clinical preceptor and upon earning her Post-Master’s Doctorate began working as faculty at Florida International university. She has taught across the anesthesia curriculum and joined the faculty at MTSA in 2020 before becoming the Program Director. She is passionate about incorporating health and wellness into curriculums for students and using evidence-based techniques to educate. She created a Micro-credential for Nurse Educators on Health and Wellness techniques to incorporate into curriculums. In addition, she believes service-based learning and giving back is a vital component to both education and wellness.

Valerie J. Diaz, DNP, CRNA, PMHNP-BC, APRN, CNE, CHSE, FAANA, CAPT (ret), NC, USN
A native of New York City, Valerie Diaz is an Associate Professor at Florida International University and the Curriculum Coordinator for the Department of Nurse Anesthesiology at Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences in Miami, Florida. She is a Certified Nurse Educator, Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator, and Retired Captain of the United States Navy. Dr. Diaz is a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiologists, an academician with over 11 years of teaching experience, and a clinician of 30+ years. Her expertise includes curriculum creation and evaluation.

 

Gerard T. Hogan, DNSc., APRN-BC, CRNA, FAANA, LtCol, USAF (ret.)
Dr. Gerard Hogan a native Floridian was born and raised in Lake Worth (Palm Beach County). He comes to Florida State University Panama City from Rush University College of Nursing in Chicago, IL where he was the director of the Nurse Anesthetist program. Prior to that he worked many years at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville as their Doctor of Nursing Practice Program Director. He graduated from Palm Beach Junior College, Lake Worth Florida in 1983 with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Nursing. He continued his education and in 1989 graduated from the University of Florida College Of Nursing in Gainesville, Florida with his Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). In 1992, Dr. Hogan received a Diploma in Nurse Anesthesia from the North Carolina Baptist Hospital School of Anesthesia in Winston Salem, NC and his Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Greensboro North Carolina. He then went on active duty in the USAF as a CRNA from 1992-1999. After transferring to the USAF Reserves, Dr. Hogan earned his Doctor of Nursing Science (DNSc) from the University of Tennessee College of Nursing in Memphis TN in 2004. He has since completed a Post Master’s Certificate in Psychiatric/Mental Health from Stony Brook University School of Nursing in 2014 and is a board certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
